Air Raid Pearl Harbor
The Imperial Japanese Navy
Conquest of the Far East
The Imperial Japanese Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor shocked the United States into the Second World War. At the time, the air raid stunned the American public and it’s military and naval professionals. How was an attack on Pearl Harbor even possible?
This is a set of two graphics details the fleet movements and air operations of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the weeks leading up to December 7th, through December 31st, 1941. Most Americans aren’t fully aware that the Pearl Harbor attack was a crucial supporting operation in the Imperial conquest of the Far East. Imperial Japan needed raw materials and oil to sustain a war against the Americans, Europeans and Chinese. Understanding the totality of those operations is crucial to understanding how the Pearl Harbor attack fits into that strategic context.
Imperial Japan’s amphibious assaults across the Far East were equally shocking events. Amphibious operations are so complicated that few nations in history had attempted them, and to this day few nations are capable of conducting such operations. No nation in history had been able to accomplish what Imperial Japan had in 1941, and with apparent ease.
Current events center around this very region. History is providing a guide to how a future conflict might unfold. It’s not a coincidence that Communist China’s strategic and operational tasks are strikingly similar to those of 1941. The concepts of strategic surprise, resource seizures, sea control and the establishment of a defensive perimeter utilizing distant Pacific islands are key topics highlighted by this set of graphics.
