The Battle of the Bulge
Ardennes Campaign Air Operations Summary
The Ardennes Campaign was the largest battle ever fought by the United States Army.
This graphic details the Air Operations during the battle. American, British and German Luftwaffe daily sorties by aircraft type are graphed. The daily weather aviation weather forecasts are also presented. Major ground operations and their duration are provided to link weather and air operations to those events.
The information is supplemented by two maps that illustrate the opening and ending phases of the German Army’s operations. These maps detail the ground combat area of operations, where the vast power of the Allied tactical air forces concentrated and brought German advance to grinding halt. A third supplemental map shows the areas of responsibility between the Allied tactical and strategic air forces. This graphic illustrates the tactical and strategic interdiction efforts that strangled the German supply efforts and movement of follow on forces into the Ardennes. Additional data graphics illustrates the size of the Allied and German ground forces over the duration of the campaign.
Overall, this graphic illustrates combined arms effort employed to halt the German offensive. The concepts of operational feasibility and validity of operational assumptions are key discussion points with this graphic. It is a valuable aid for the explanation and study of the Ardennes campaign.
