The Guadalcanal Campaign
The United States Marine Corps and the First Pacific Offensive
The opening ground offensive against Imperial Japan. Guadalcanal continues to be wellspring of fascination and fulfillment for students of the Pacific War. The interest the campaign generates is due to it’s amphibious nature and epic naval battles that that range from aircraft carrier battles to battleship clashes and the cruiser/destroyer battles fought to establish sea control in the lower Solomon Islands.
This graphic emphasizes the Imperial Japanese Army force levels during the campaign, and the Imperial Navy’s logistical supply operations that attempted to sustain those forces. This graphic provides a visual timeline reference for the numerous air, land and sea battles that occurred during the campaign. The campaign is so complex that it is easy to loose track of the sequence of battles and operations and their impact on follow on actions.
Professional development themes with this product include the veracity of intelligence collections and assessments, sufficiency of resources assigned to accomplish a task, and the impact of attrition on operations (both tactical and the strategic implications).
