The B-29 Strategic Bombardment Campaign
against Imperial Japan
The strategic bombing campaign against Imperial Japan employed the most advanced weapons systems developed during the Second World War, the B-29 Super Fortress.
The details of this campaign are not well known. This graphic presents the overall flow of the campaign. Each B-29 raid of the campaign, including the number of aircraft, is presented by date. The effects of each raid on the target cities is presented on the map of Japan.
Also included are the sea mining operations conducted by the B-29s. The mining operations had a disastrous effect on Japanese maritime shipping. This prevented the movement of food and all other necessities across Japan.
This campaign brought the Second World War to an end, in the process inflicting staggering losses on the Japanese civilian population. The graphic illustrates the lethality of modern weapon systems, which is a lesson in the vital necessity for nations to solve their problems through peaceful means.
The graphic also illustrates the necessity of standing up to international aggression by rogue dictators, and the very real threat that only a few nuclear weapons pose to civilian populations.
