Operation Overlord

D – Day Operational Summary

D – Day and Operation Overlord

Words that resonate through the American, British, Canadian and French cultures. The liberation of Europe from Nazi domination is perhaps the most important event of the 20th century. The opening stage of the ground war began with a forcible entry operation on June 6th, 1944.

Operation Overlord is a vast topic, so vast that it often overwhelms audiences new to the subject. This graphic is a learning aid for explaining the invasion. The airborne components, beach landings and geography of the invasion are presented as a whole to explain the missions of each of those Allied efforts. The German defensive batteries and their armaments with ranges are presented. Allied naval bombardment units are presented as well. The first beach assault waves are overlaid on the map to illustrate the courage and heroism of those troops who kicked in the Nazi door to liberate occupied France.

A timeline of the airborne and infantry landings for June 6th illustrates the flow of forces onto and across the beaches.

The totality of this information enables a far greater understanding of how all the separate operations worked together to secure the Allied foothold in Normandy, from which Europe was liberated from tyranny.

From our experience, this graphic is best experienced while enjoying a nice single malt, or sampling the excellent red wines of France.
