RAF Clandestine Air Operations
in Occupied France
During the Second World War, special operations airlift was the life blood of resistance movements in Europe’s Nazi occupied territories. For occupied France, this was especially true.
This graphic illustrates the operational history of 161 Squadron and their covert night flights into Nazi occupied France to support French Resistance groups. This communications link allowed the Special Operations Executive to insert covert operatives, equipment, radios, weapons and explosives into France. This support encouraged and enabled the French to build an effective guerrilla network to resist, disrupt, delay and tie down significant Wehrmacht and Gestapo resources.
These operations are a fascinating look at one of the most successful clandestine operations of the Second World War. From these operations sprang forth a huge genre of literature and films in popular culture, including the James Bond movies.
The actual events that inspired those films and books is so intriguing. Royal Air Force pilots flying Lysanders deep into occupied France at night, using only compass and clock for navigation to find make shift airfields, to deliver and pick up clandestine operatives.
