B-24 Air Raid against the Ploesti Oil Industry
An event infamous among the storied history of the Allied bombing campaign against Nazi Germany’s oil industry.
The air raid planners attempted to introduce the elements of surprise and innovation into a heavy bomber raid against the Nazi controlled oil refineries located at Ploesti, Romania. The planners thought that a low level raid by overwhelming numbers of heavy bombers, all converging on the target within minutes of each other, would result in a high degree of bombing accuracy and fewer losses due to the surprise nature of the attack.
Those assumptions proved to be wildly incorrect. The German air defenses were fully alerted to the attack, who then inflicted very high losses on the B-24s as they flew through the engagement zones of every caliber of anti-aircraft artillery located around the target. The sheer professionalism and heroism of the B-24 crews is staggering as they pressed on to the targets.
Professional development themes with this product include proper validation of assumptions, valid feasibility assessments needed to achieve organizational coordination, and the need to trust and value the opinions of your colleagues and subordinates during the planning discussions.
