The Battle of Midway
The most epic battle fleet engagement since Trafalgar, and the most important naval battle in the Second World War. This battle between aircraft carrier fleets transformed naval warfare.
This is a set of two graphics, each of equal size. The timeline graphic illustrates the air operations of the forces involved. The cartographic chart illustrates the fleet movements, air operations, and air search pattern of Kido Butai. Tactical and theater wide charts and the composition of the Imperial Navy forces assigned to the operation is also provided. Those operational elements combined illustrate the shear scale of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s effort in this battle. And the shear audacity of Admiral Nimitz’s decision to seek battle.
Professional development themes with this product include the value of signals intelligence collections, the strategic value of tactical surprise, the risk associated with insufficient battlefield reconnaissance, and the impact of attrition on operations (both tactical and the strategic implications).
Data is derived from after action reports and primary sources.
